Let’s not be gullible: in the dynamic landscape of the FM and maintenance sector, the intricacies of talent retention, job satisfaction and overall organisational success depend, in large part, on one crucial element  — salary and compensation.

As companies strive to attract, retain and motivate qualified professionals, a thorough analysis of benchmarks becomes paramount. The IFM community was aware of this concern, and it was only natural to become involved in the debate.

A report that provides answers

As a community created not only to connect innovative facilities management and maintenance professionals, but also to help build a more resilient industry, gathering relevant information on this issue was essential so that we could all access, discuss and work with the data.

Thus was born another IFM – Intelligence for Maintenance initiative: the FM & Maintenance Salary and Compensation Report. Over the course of three months, more than 800 responses were collected from Spanish, Portuguese, French, British and Brazilian professionals, allowing us to draw a meaningful picture of the reality of remuneration and benefits in each market. Industry leaders such as Ben Yexley and Simon Barlow also contributed valuable insights.

The conclusions drawn reveal that, in the UK:

  • Leadership and management skills are taking over from technical skills.
  • Recognition, mental health, flexibility and career development are increasingly valued.
  • A job change in the next 12 months is largely considered

But these findings, in the words of Rebeca Fdez Farpón, who writes the foreword of the spanish version of the report, “go far beyond the remuneration approach and place facility management and, of course, its professionals at the centre of the new model, not only of asset management, but of how we should understand the reality of work from now on”.

The sector is currently in a state of transition and growth, and this study delves into the undeniable role of understanding pay structures in shaping the employment landscape.
